On the "edit survey" page you have the choice to use "default" numbering on the questions, "none" or "display numbers". If you choose display numbers you can set the numbering as you wish. For example, you can use letters in stead of numbers, roman numbers etc. (E.g. 1a, 1b - A B C - I II III IV)
